The wife has been wanting to try the El Pinto Salsa for some time now, so for our inaugural test we decided to go with the Wild & Fiery Chipotle Salsa. She’s also a fan of really hot sauces, so she snuck a jar of the Hot variety in the basket as I was over looking at the chips. Sneaky girl.
Sniff Test
We popped the lid off the jar and were greeted with a heavy puff of Chipotle, jalapenos and green chiles which, in our opinion, means you have a pretty balanced salsa if none of the aromas overpower one another. We poured the entire jar into our salsa-tasting boat and let it sit for a few, stirring it around to further marry all the flavors. This was also about the time my mouth started watering!
Chip Test
Using a combination of our Tostitos and Santitas chips, we dug deep and were pleased to know that we could load up quite a bit of salsa on the chip without breakage. The salsa has a medium-thick base to it, but that’s only on the top where the chunky ingredients are. This is a good sign and shows that once you get a scoop on the chip, it doesn’t run off all over the place. You can move the chip from the bowl to your mouth without the fear of leaving behind a long salsa trail! Once your chunks are gone, however, so is the party. We ended up having alot of remaining juice in the bowl.
Taste Test
Since we chose the El Pinto Chipotle Salsa that said HOT all over the lid, we were expecting a first bite that would set our tongues on fire. We were surprised that it didn’t … initially. Yes, as you might have guessed, 2-3 seconds into the bite the heat came up, initiating a little bit of sweat below both of our eyes. The taste was good and even though there was a chipotle flavor, it didn’t overpower the entire salsa. I’m a bit sensitive to chipotle flavors, but this was just enough to add to the taste without scarring me for life. We powered down the entire jar of the Wild & Fiery in a couple minutes but, as I said above, only as far as the chunky parts. Neither of us wanted to break out a straw for the remaining juices (well, maybe the wife did, she is a bit of a salsa addict).
