Ortega is a pretty popular brand of salsa in my parts. Not only can you can find it on almost every supermarket store shelf, it’s also quite common in some mini-marts. We figured any brand that easy to find must be good, right? The wife and I decided to relieve the supermarket shelves of one jar and give it a go.
Sniff Test
As expected, since we chose the medium blend, we knew we weren’t going to be pounded by strong aromas that make tears form immediately in your eyes. We were able to pick up the smell of the tomatoes and onions, however neither of which were overpowering.
Chip Test
After pouring the Ortega Thick and Chunky Medium Salsa into our test bowl, we dug in deep with our variety of chips. The Ortega has a nice texture to it, lots of chunks of everything floating around. Our chips were able to pick up mounds of salsa without breakage, meaning less on your shirt and more in your mouth! Thickness is good, even down to the bottom of the jar.
Taste Test
For those of you that like thick and chunky salsas, this one will do you well. As I mentioned before, the chunkieness is on point but, unfortunately, thats all its got. This salsa is a bit bland, with no kick from the onions or jalapeno peppers like you’d expect. Maybe it’s due to the fact that it is a medium blend, but I want savoriness. Make those ingredients pop in my mouth so I can taste them, not hide them behind tons of tomato juices and pastes. It’s a decent medium blend salsa, but we know there are better ones out there.
