Mrs. Renfro’s Hot Jalapeno Green Salsa

While most of our salsa purchases are made as we’re wandering the aisles of the food mart making our weekly grocery purchase, we actually searched out Mrs. Renfro’s brand based on some reviews we’ve read online about how good it is. These people raved about the Jalapeno Green Salsa, so when the time came to pick up a couple jars we grabbed a Hot version for review. I don’t typically eat the green stuff (not a huge fan of tomatillos), however my wife loves salsa in any color. She told me that I’d really like it because it’s primarily made with jalapenos and also because the internet said so. Let see if she’s right, here’s to another internet review.

Sniff Test
I popped the top, put my nose close and took a nice, long whiff of the green-filled jar. An immediate aroma of jalapeno and onions filled my head, yet it wasn’t as overwhelming as I thought it might be, especially for a ‘hot’ salsa. We filled out testing bowl with the green stuff and let it sit for a few seconds, allowing it to air out a bit. A quick stir and another sniff, we were able to pick out a little hint of the garlic as well. We were ready to dig in!

Chip Test
To me, the consistency was just right – a good bit of chunk wrapped in a nice, thick sauce that made gathering it on the chip an easy feat. My wife also found the texture just right, breaking her Tostitos Crispy Rounds in half to use the ‘flat’ edge to shovel it up. Even down to the bottom of our bowl, we were able to spoon it up with very little of it left. We certainly loved this about this salsa – one thing we’re not a fan of is having soup left in our bowl after our yummy salsa has been gobbled down.

Taste Test
Both the wife and I were surprised after our first bite for 2 reasons; 1) the initial taste was REALLY good and 2) it didn’t appear to be all that hot. Now, as I mentioned before, I’m a red salsa type of guy; the wife loves it all … so, she knew what to expect as far as flavor. Me, on the other hand, was expecting to not like it simply because it was green, but boy did Mrs. Renfro set me straight. The flavor was fantastic with just enough of the sneaky heat to feel but not enough to send you scurrying for a jug of milk. You can taste the jalapeno. You can taste the garlic. You can taste the onion. A great blend of flavors (and chunks) that had us powering through the first bowl like it was crack. We had to refill the bowl 2 more times to get our fill of this stuff – we could have inhaled the rest of the jar if we had the time (dinner was just around the corner).

Both of us thought Mrs. Renfro’s Hot Jalapeno Green Salsa is a tasty treat for those that want a yummy green salsa. I can honestly say that I’m a green-salsa convert. Bring on some more!
